“White Mass” Recognizes Health Care Professionals

BRIDGEPORT – The 17th annual White Mass for Catholic health care professionals in Fairfield County will be celebrated by Bishop William E. Lori on Sunday, March 14, at 8:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport. The Mass recognizes the contributions of Catholic physicians, nurses, dentists and other health care professionals.

Breakfast will immediately follow at the Fairfield Country Club. Bishop Lori will be the principal celebrant and homilist for the White Mass. Bishop Jean Laffitte, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Vatican City, will be the speaker and guest of honor.

Greetings and remarks will be offered by Mark Roithmayr, president of Autism Speaks.

ST. VINCENT’S WHITE MASS COMMITTEE – Bill Hoey, vice president, Mission Services; Michael V. Herman, M.D., chairman, Department of Medicine; Sr. Mary Jean Tague, D.C., parish nurse coordinator; and Thomas G. Flynn, M.D.
The breakfast gathering will include the presentation of the “Father Rufin Compassionate Care Awards” in memory of the much beloved Fr. Rufin Kuveikis, O.F.M. Cap., longtime chaplain of Norwalk Hospital.

Michael V. Herman, M.D., chairman of the Department of Medicine at St. Vincent’s Medical Center is chairing of the event.

The St. Vincent’s White Mass Committee also includes Bill Hoey, vice president, Mission Services; Sr. Mary Jean Tague, D.C., parish nurse coordinator; and Thomas G. Flynn, M.D.

Bishop Jean Laffitte
Bishop Jean Laffitte was born in Oloron-Sainte- Marie, France. He earned a degree in political science at the University of Toulouse, and subsequently studied at Cambridge University in England and at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He was ordained in 1989 for the Diocese of Autun, France. He is a member of the Emmanuel Community.

Fr. Laffitte continued his studies at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, earning a doctorate in moral theology. In 1994, he joined the faculty of the John Paul II Institute, serving for three years as vice president.

In 2003, he was appointed a consultor for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. In 2005, he was appointed undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family and, in 2006, vice president of the Pontifical Academy for Life. On October 22, 2009, the Holy Father appointed him Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

He was ordained to the episcopacy on December 12, 2009 by His Eminence Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, S.D.B., secretary of state of Pope Benedict XVI, at the Basilica of St. Peter in Vatican City.

He is the author of numerous publications, and, in addition to his native French, is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and German.
